A new round of government subsidy under Employment Support Scheme to support Hong Kong companies

The Hong Kong Government opens applications for a new round of subsidy (2022 Employment Support Scheme – 2022 ESS). Applications must be submitted between April 29 and May 12, 2022.

This type of benefit, which had already been granted in 2020, aims to provide financial support in 2022 for companies to maintain their current staff during the 5th wave of the pandemic in Hong Kong or even encourage hiring more employees to leverage business.

The Hong Kong government injected US$43 billion into the Anti-Epidemic Fund to implement this new batch of benefit. The Government estimates that ESS 2022 will benefit around 160,000 employers, 1.6 million workers and 140,000 self-employed workers.

Eligibility criteria have been improved compared to the 2020 action, and this year includes short-time, temporary and self-employed workers, in addition to the removal of the monthly salary cap for employees eligible for the subsidy.

Companies in Hong Kong can receive up to HKD8,000 per month/per employee for 3 months (i.e. May, June and July 2022) depending on government quotas and criteria.
